Topical day: December 7, 2010
Scope
The objective of this topical day on 35 years of fusion R&D at SCK•CEN is to present how Belgium and the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre in particular have contributed to this fantastic scientific challenge to develop a new source of abundant and clean energy.
The remaining steps and difficulties will be set forth as well as the present and future involvement of Belgium and SCK•CEN in this international high-level technical and scientific R&D programme.
An academic session will present the most important accomplishments in the area of fusion R&D and will sketch the evolution at the European and international level.
A scientific session will focus on the current and future activities at SCK•CEN and our contribution to the R&D and roadmap towards fusion energy production.
Context
This year it is about 35 years since SCK•CEN signed its first contract in fusion R&D and joined therewith the Association EURATOM-Belgian State for thermonuclear fusion. This anniversary is an excellent occasion for a topical day on fusion technology. It creates an interesting opportunity to cover the past R&D in this field and to look at the future activities.
Moreover, SCK•CEN is pleased to welcome the former Heads of Research Unit on fusion R&D at SCK•CEN.
